NYSALM
has reserved "The Well," an open space on the first floor
of the Legislative Office Building, from 9am to 3pm. The
Well is a high-traffic area for legislative staff and visitors in
which we can interact with the public. We expect that most midwifery
supporters will come to Albany to participate in the rally
that will be held from noon to 1pm and spend time before
and after the rally speaking with the public, midwives, students
midwives, and fellow midwifery supporters, and join us in
celebrating our anniversary with cake and raffle prizes at 2pm.
Once you arrive
at the Empire State Plaza, follow signs for the Legislative Office
Building. You will need to go through a security checkpoint - remember
to have identification with you. You can ask the security
personnel for directions to The Well - it is quite easy to find
and NYSALM will post signs as best we can to assist all participants.
There are many
adult and kid friendly things to do in Albany that you may want
to take advantage of during the day such as a guided
tour of the Capitol building or visiting
the New York State Museum, which is free to visitors and has
several interesting exhibits and an historic carousel. For more
information about Albany, including more activities, directions,
maps, and parking information for buses, please see the links at
the end of this page.
There are several
places for lunch at the Plaza and surrounding areas. The links below
will detail some options. In addition, several lunch vendors set
up on Washington Avenue and you can sit outside on benches or the
grass on the plaza in front of the Capitol building if the weather
cooperates. See

We would like
to identify 1 or 2 consumers per legislative region to join us in
our lobby day appointments. Because of the nature of the meetings,
a group of 6 or fewer participants, comprised of midwives, student
midwives, and midwifery supporters, works best. Attending appointments
with a quiet baby / child in your arms is welcomed. If the child
becomes restless, please be prepared to step out of the appointment.
If you have more than one child or older children who are likely
to become restless, then it is best to plan for those children to
stay with another adult during the time you are lobbying. Most
appointments will be take place between 11am and 3:30 pm,
but some appointments may be earlier. If you have
signed up to be in an lobbying group, you will be contacted by email
ahead of time as to your appointment time and location. At least
one midwife in your group will be experienced in lobbying and will
have a folder with information to give to the legislator. If you
have handouts that you would like to give to legislators, please
let us know ahead of time and we will integrate other handouts as
best we can.
We'd like to
know who is joining us, regardless if you are part of the group
of supports who will participate in the rally and talk with those
who visit our table or if you're interested in joining a lobbying
group. Please visit FreeOurMidwives
to register and for more information, including ride-sharing.
