Ask HealthQuest Systems to Grant Community Midwives Admitting Privileges at Their Hospitals

"In spite of the increasing demand for midwifery services both in and out of hospitals, Health Quest has declined to respond to midwives' requests for admitting privileges. Granting community midwives such privileges would enhance continuity of care, reduce the burden on hospital staff while bringing business to the hospital, and would enhance safety by reducing delays which may occur during transfers of care."

Birth Center Bill: NYSALM Lobbied in Albany on April 21

Lobby Day 2015 was a great success! Consumers from birth advocacy organizations around the state joined us on April 21 in speaking to our legislators about expanding access to birth centers (A446/S4325)and other issues of importance to women and midwives. We made over 60 visits.
We honored Senator Kemp Hannon, (R-Long Island), chair of the Senate Health Committee, for all his efforts to improve access to quality health care for women in our state. We also appreciated that Assembly Member Richard Gottfried (D-NYC), chair of the Assembly Health Committee and a sponsor of our birth center bill, also took time from his schedule to speak with us.
Midwifery students from every education program in our state learned a lesson in advocacy and were able to network with students from other programs and with practicing midwives. The birth center bill has already passed the Assembly and was voted out of the Senate Health Committee the day after Lobby Day. Now is the time for telephone calls to your state senator asking for a positive vote when the bill comes to the floor of the Senate.
