With roots dating to 1929, the American College of Nurse-Midwives
(ACNM) is the oldest women's health care organization in the U.S.
ACNM provides research, accredits midwifery education programs,
administers and promotes continuing education programs, establishes
clinical practice standards, creates liaisons with state and federal
agencies and members of Congress. THE MISSION OF ACNM is to promote
the health and well-being of women and infants within their families
and communities through the development and support of the profession
of midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives, and certified
midwives. The philosophy inherent in the profession states that
nurse-midwives believe every individual has the right to safe, satisfying
health care with respect for human dignity and cultural variations.

Coalition for Improving Maternity Services
The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS--pronounced
"kims") was established in 1996 as a collaborative effort
among a broad spectrum of maternity service providers, including
midwives, physicians, nurses, childbirth educators, labor support
and postpartum doulas, and lactation consultants. its first five
years, the work of the coalition has focused on the creation and
implementation of the evidence-based Mother-Friendly Childbirth
Initiative (MFCI) which provides guidelines for identifying and
designating "mother-friendly" birth sites including hospitals,
birth centers and home-birth services. The initiative outlines ten
steps for mother-friendly care and includes a requirement for birth
sites to also qualify as "baby-friendly" according to
the World Health Organization's guidelines. A consumer version of
the Initiative, "Having a Baby? Ten Questions to Ask"
is also available.
VBAC
This website provides childbearing women and maternity care professionals
access to research-based information, resources, continuing education
and support for VBAC* (vaginal birth after cesarean).
