Membership
Joining the
New York State Association of Licensed Midwives is important for
all midwives and for the families they care for in the state of
New York. Your $150 membership in NYSALM will help us influence
the legislation, regulations, and guidelines affecting the practice
of midwifery in New York State. Our objective is to promote and
improve access to midwifery care throughout the state and to improve
statewide communications among licensed professional midwives.
Over 1200 midwives
have become licensed in New York State. In 2002, over 26,000 births
were attended by New York's licensed midwives, accounting for over
11% of the births in the state that year. Thirteen years earlier,
in 1989, only 4% of births were attended by licensed midwives! With
such significant numbers, we can have a significant influence on
our practice and the health and well-being of the women and families
in this state. Join us and make sure your voice is heard.
With your membership,
you receive the benefits of having your statewide association at
your side. We have an active and ongoing relationship with many
parts of New York State's government and can influence issues as
important and diverse as insurance reimbursement, hospital admitting
privileges, and inter-professional relationships. But you can only
get the benefits if you are a member. So please join today and add
your voice to those of your midwife colleagues throughout New York
State.
There are four
categories of membership in NYSALM - active, retired, affiliate,
and student.
Active
Members:
Only New York State licensed midwives can be active members. They
are entitled to attend all membership meetings, speak at those meetings
and make motions, vote on resolutions, and receive all official
mailings. They may run for office. Termination of active membership
will occur with voluntary resignation, non-payment of dues, or loss
of license. Active members may not represent NYSALM without prior
authorization.
Retired
Members:
New York State licensed midwives who are no longer employed
are entitled to the same rights and responsibilities as Active members.
Student
Members:
Student midwives who reside or attend midwifery school in New York
State. Students are non-voting members but are invited to attend
Board Meetings and all NYSALM activities.
Associate
Members:
Associate members are individuals other than NYS licensed midwives,
such as friends of midwives or other interested individuals. Associate
members must be current on dues. They are entitled to attend all
membership meetings, speak at those meetings once all voting members
have been heard, and receive all official mailings. Associate members
cannot vote and cannot hold office. Associate members may not represent
NYSALM without prior authorization.
Each active
member of NYSALM will be assigned to a district, based on the county
of her/his New York State license. The state of New York has been
divided into eight districts (details),
with representation on the Board of Directors based on the number
of midwives from each district. We urge all members to have regular
communication with their Board representative, as well as with all
of the officers. In this way, you can make your voice and your needs
heard, and help midwifery go forward into the 21st century.
